Purely because, unless you live in a very well off area, you're not likely to find such a diverse selection. Our city centre is dire. Independent shops pop up, but do not last long. The "historic barbican" is the only area with that kind of choice. But it's not where you'd go for every day shopping.
It was interesting watching the Aldi at Christmas on tv last night. After years of Tesco, Asda, and Sainsburys killing off the butcher, baker, greengrocer, hardwear , home décor, fishmonger, the list is endless, the high street we see now is the result of the above. They did it by slashing prices first of all, no small trader could compete with them. To cut a long story short, Aldi are killing them off now, so you could say they are now getting a taste of what they dished out. Love it!!
It's in Walthamstow, with real shopkeepers

Big supermarkets will only set up where there's a big catchment area, so there will be a village high street here and there that remains to a certain extent untouched, but really not the norm across the country. While I can understand ( including myself) the need to shop at the cheapest place, this is not at a independent shop, or farmers market, as it can be very expensive. But in my view we have a lot to thank Aldi for, they have hit the big three, and are forcing them to reduce their prices weather they like it or not, they are being hit hard, like they have been hitting the small trader for years.
With out Aldi coming on the market, weather you shop with them or not, they have stopped the big boys in their tracks, and stopped them dictating price rises to the customer and supplier. This just go's to show your never to big, for a dusting down.
