if so what, also i have some nice rose wine but wonder if i should buy some fizz....

I wouldn't worry too much about offering a huge selection. I'm guessing they'll have eaten Christmas lunch - otherwise they'd be home in the afternoon preparing and cooking their meal. A bowl of shelled fresh nuts, perhaps some crisps, chocolates and some mince pies, together with sherry or Baileys or something like that, and wine, and tea and coffee.

I agree with Anne, don't worry about nibbles, just put out what you already have. I wouldn't eat anything if I'd already eaten.

nice to put some things out to go with the fizz..
Your decison to offer fizz, crsips, twiglets and mince pies, and to have some coffee on offer is perfect emmie.

maydup cheers, will do that...
I don't think I'd manage to supply fizz...I'd drink it and just be very happy when they arrived :-)

i bought them a bottle for the day, so will wait for them to arrive, couldn't not share it..
I'm glad you have made your decision Emmie - I was wondering what you would do and I think you will have a lovely stress free birthday and Christmas day x

rosie, i was worried about their nightmare staircase
but i don't mind buying in some things to serve here
seems the least i can do..
Emmie - I was joking. I don't really drink anymore so a few glasses of fizz and I'd be pizzed.

Anyway...I'd always turn up with my own drink and leave it for the host.
Happened to us a couple of years ago - a couple had arranged to pop in and we would all 4 goon to the pub which opened 10 - 12 noon - except that year it didn't! I had a bottle of fizz in a cold conservatory, rummaged round and found olives, crisps and a couple of other bits with some small pieces of cheese...…………..a great time was had by all!
