I have some old silver coins that have become dirty through circulation. Does anyone please have any tips for cleaning them without tarnishing them?

The best stuff is ordinary white vinegar, just leave them to soak until clean
Try toothpaste (not the gel type) on a soft cloth rubbed gently in a circular motion around the coin. Change the paste frequently.

Don't tell any numismatists what your up to - they generally forbid all types of coin cleaning as it reduces the value of the coins.
Hi I'm barry Scott....Try Cillit BANG!....and the dirt is gone
cillit bang!!!
hi nanty

Please, Please dont use any abrasive substance at all!
I am a coin collecter (numismatist) and as theprof says any cleaning will drastically reduce there value to almost being worthless.
If you do want to get the grime off them just soak them in distilled water and gently rub with a soft cloth.
If that does not improve them try soaking in a small amount of olive oil for a few hours and then rince it off.
Obviously they are your coins and you can do what you want with them, but as a collector i would rather purchace an unclean coin in worse condition than a cleaned or polished one in good condition.
Hope this helps you choose which way to go.
cillit bang!!
put your coins in a glass of cola- they will be clean in 12hrs
Coinman - Why?
hello hamish

if nantyboy wants to clean his coins to improve their appearance, then thats fine but it will definately take value off them should he wish to sell them.
we collectors are funny about that and my personal preference is to look at a coin and if it has a little bit of tarnish then this adds to its appeal.
