Have just been reading of a women in Australia who died during an eating competition, she's not the first to have died in such an activity. To me its just a pointless unhealthy thing to do to your body, there's no skill whatsoever, and surly can never be classed as any kind of sport. What,s your thoughts ?

Its gluttony . Moreover these offers in restaurants where you get your whole meal free if you can eat a huge amount of food in a certain time should be against the Law. Its bad enough watching fat people at an all you can eat buffet, but competition eating, well you must be really weird to enjoy both competing and watching that.
15 minutes of fame to die? Stupid or what ?
Folk do die doing things. Can't ban everything in a free world. Anyway, eating competitions are hardly sporting activities; more test of speed and endurance.

Was it confirmed there was a connection between the competition and her demise ?
I knew a bloke who held numerous eating/drinking titles (his son followed in his footsteps).
He did it because:
a) he realised he had a particular sort of 'skill';
b) he won titles and records;
c) taking part in the competitions usually raised large amounts of money for charity.
Maybe this was her own special tribute to Mr Creosote, a.k.a. Terry Jones.
appalling way to go.

OG, it is said she had a seizure, but like all reports limited information, it was held at an hotel, so not good for the hotel that held the completion. At the end of the report it just stated that eating competitions had claimed life's in the past.
I think let people do what they want if it's not affecting others. Eating competitions don't affect me in the slightest. Let em crack on.
don't care.....personally I would ban boxing but the same arguments apply, its personal choice whether to do it or support it.
oh no.....thedevil and I agree....its the end of the world as we know it
I think you underestimate the capacity in antipodeans to shrug and move on, teacake.
Not a ‘ sport ‘ surely ?

reading through the list of Peter Dowdeswell's achievements is scary. A yard of ale in 4.9 seconds must take a huge amount of practice.

And he is just a scrawny little chap.
Takes the saying, "Likes a pint or two" to a whole new level. Bet he doesn't have many drinking chums who try and keep up with him on a night out:-))
