surely someone could have spoken out, it's an appalling case when you read what he did to women and men, glad he got a high sentence. Let's hope he's not one who does half his time and gets' out

// But after I suffered severe complications after surgery from an overconfident gynaecologist I was told that if I complained my nursing career would be over.//

this must have been a few years ago -

all the advice i have given is - go and see a lawyer and dont spend too much, you may not have a case.

Maybe some patients self medicate that put docs in dilemmas, as 2 of my rellies did.

er not sure
Shipman held clinics - the men queued quietl awaiting their turn, as the queue moved forward ....
because none of them trusted the Prison Medical Service

There is no evidence that Shipman actually held 'clinics' - merely a suspicion, and there was obviously no 'queue' shuffling anywhere.

Romancing the facts on such a serious matter is inappropriate.
What puzzles me about this is what did he get out of it? Was it to do with the money he was paid for performing the operations - many of them were done at a private hospital? Pure self-aggrandizement, feeling he was powerful and unassailable? Or maybe he was in the grip of some strange Munchausen-type syndrome?

It beggars belief that he got away with it for so long, and I'm sure - as the enquiry has said - that there must have been colleagues who knew, but said nothing.
How did he get away with it?

Same way Shipman did I suspect.

I would suggest it is the power thing - I can do what I want and no-one can stop me.

It's a mental aberration that strikes some individuals, but they are usually not in position to exercise it.

Some, such as surgeons, and indeed priests, who are revered and to whom normal rules of accountability are allowed slide, are able to exercise their God persona, to the detriment of others, and the increase of their sense of power and infallibility.

Some will have known, but felt too cowed, either by the force of his personality, the realisation that they were unlikely to be believed against such a powerful individual, or the worry of risk to their own career prospects, or even job.

It all conspires horribly to allow a situation like this to occur.

Absolutely - as my previous post outlines.

A God-like superiority combined with a secure place of status leads to this sort of dreadful outcome.

others must be held accountable, he may be God like in his administrations, but there are people who colluded with this depraved human being....
As I said, knowing that is one thing, proving it in court is another.
The answer to your question is in the link ! Many of his 'fellow workers' did complain ! But so strong/great was his reputation that they were ignored until too late !
