Can't connect to broadband for long???
4 Answers
We have bought two new desktops and a linksys routers to connect them/share to our BT broadband lite. An 'IT' friend came to set it up this for us but even though we were supposed to be connected there was a fault with the broadband line, which meant the our friend could not setup and check everything worked and left it to us.
Once up and running we noticed though that we would suddenly lose our connection whether it be that we were online at the time or went back to check something on the web and it would not let us on, the screen would just say the 'server has not been found'. If we powered down the router waited and power back up that would often solve the problem however this still happens some upto 10 time a day.
I have phoned BT who say it is not due to them and that we have been connected all the time with no disruption. I have phone Linksys and have gone through lots of checks which confirmed the system and settings were fine but they talked me through up dating the software. After it was updated I checked to see if it worked and it said the same "server no found" so I changed the website on screen to another site and it worked - same on the other pc. I thought it was fixed but sure enough it is doing the same "server not found" later that day.

-One of the two desktops can access/surf the internet while the other is saying "server not found and it will not open any web page at all.
-I will click on internet explorer to open another search engine it will not allow me to, but will let me check my emails on a previously minimalised web page (at the bottom of my screen).
-It will take a sudden dislike for a site and will not let you access it for hours even though you can open any other and the other desktop will be able to access it.
-After Linksys took me though all the settings and these were saved recently I went back into the router settings to check them - and they had all changed.

If you are using a modem router then I would suggest it is down to overheating. Linksys modem routers are renowned for it especially the WAG54G. Try using a desktop fan to keep the router cool, if this improves the connection then you know that is the problem. Another way of solving this snag is if BT gave you a modem when you took on their contract then use that for the internet connection and connect it to the router using an ethernet cable but you will have to change the static IP address of the router. The router will work fine as a router only and overheating will not affect the connectivity.
