Maybe you could line it with sheets of polythene, and after woulds punch in some holes for drainage
^afterwards^
Why line it at all?
Just fill it with compost.

Thanks for replies need to line it as it is openwork
Yes, I would assume drainage is essential otherwise it will end up as a stagnant muddy mess and the plants would die.
Without getting to technical .. as previously stated, put holes in the bottom. Then a layer of stones, then put a bit of compost in. If you have any old compost bags, just cut the bottoms off, then cut up one side. Open the bag out and lay it inside the container, across the sides.
Carry on and fill the rest of the container with compost. The pressure will hold the bags in place.
