Am wanting to replace my old, very old PC and would like it built to my needs not MS if you get my drift. Want to browse net ,email, burn CD's and DVD's and have decent screen. I use 4MB broadband and would like to run open source products e.g. Firefox and Thunderbird with Linux OS. So I don't want to buy a system with an MS bundle. What components would I need so I can have one built privately, proccessor, memory etc. and what sort of price would I be expected to pay?
I did this and it did not work out cheaper. I now look through the Dell Outlet which are PC's returned for cosmetic damage or wrong specification ordered. They come without the monitor, speakers although they do have preinstalled XP. The search engine there is type in your specification and see what they have
As tellboy says, often you won't get it cheaper anyway. Still price up the regular dell systems with XP installed. Then all you'll need to do is download some GNU/Linux distro and install it (I recommend Ubuntu).
