It is about 6 to 8" tall, all green (no flowers) with long thin leaves (if they are called leaves), spiky looking. They grow prolifically in groups. I thought it was cat o nine tails, but I was wrong. Me and a friend are arguing about this. Can't find them online.

Horsetail?
Question Author
I've just googled that thanks Tilly. It looks very like a field horsetail, but on the photo, the stem looks too thick. So I'm still not sure.

Anybody else got any ideas?
Goose grass, horrid sticky stuff?
I was going to suggest the same as Tilly although I call it Marestail
Question Author
No, it's definitely not that. Going for a dog walk now, will have another look at it and see if it is field horsetail, but not sure it is. It's a race between me and friend to see who can find out first!
can you post a photo? (Or a link to a photo).
You can download free apps to identify plants (but you only get so many free goes).
Euphorbia lathris ?
I think Tilly has it, my money is on horsetail.
I use the plantsnap app
and I have not paid anything yet
Question Author
Yes Tilly was right, it was hard to tell from the photos I googled. Field horsetail (or marestail as Prudie said). Thank you both.
