This week I received an email informing me that I had a reply to a question I had posted 3 months ago.
According to the question number some 60000 questions had been posted in the interim and I wonder how it was possible for my question to be still 'open' when only 36000 odd are currently 'open' ?

More often than not, I get NO answers emailed, although I go back to the Question and can see that there are answers!
I think it got worse around the time of the recent changes to the site.

You can access old questions in 3 ways I can think of:
1) through the 'Search the Site' facility
2) through 'My Profile' / 'Questions I'm involved in'
3) by bookmarking a question that interests you with the intention of returning to it at a later date
Your contributor probably fell into one of those categories.
