I have been given a huge bag of broad beans. Do they need to be shelled as when biting into a raw bean, a pea like thing popped out.

Yes
I always remove the outer shell of a broad Bean. Lovely with a cream sauce
I shell them too.
Some people, myself included, take the outer skin off which renders them more tender.
You don't have to but they are much nicer if you do.
Yes, they need to be shelled - and here are a few ideas what you can do with them:

(I'm not fond of broad beans just as a vegetable accompanying a meal but that risotto looks yummy!)

Yuck.

Thanks all just spent the last 15 minutes shelling.

Recipes do look good Chico!! As I've made a cauliflower cheese, I'm going to add the beans to the sauce.
Yes webbo. I was made to sit with one broad bean on my plate when I was 10. I sat there for half an hour and my mother gave in. I have never eaten them since either, I'd honestly gag - and I've never heard of anyone not shelling them.
My parents love them but along with.
Aubergine
Liver
Kidney
and any really creamy foods (apart from deserts) I cant stand them.

Give me a nice sprout any time. :-)
