I know the phone I send them to is on the Unicel network, so I use the Unicel website to send the text, and put the number in on there in full, plus the texts are free and you can send an infinate number.
I don't know if it sends to other networks or not, I've never tried it, but it's perfect for me.

Sorry if this is a basic, but don't forget the international dialling code. Press * twice and you will get a + sign. then enter the 1 followed by the number (which will probably not start with a 1, although I can't be 100% certain of that). On all of my US contacts there are 10 digits after the 1.
so you press something like this ** 1 999 888 7777
and you get
+ 1 999 888 7777 on the screen, then just send.
Let us know how you get on.

Just for info, since you've solved it already: the "+" that BenDToy said to enter is the international dialing prefix. In this country (and a lot of others), this equates to 00 as you've entered. In some countries the international prefix is not 00, Australia for example uses 0011. If you store your phone numbers with a +, then they'll work in any country.
And the dialing code for Ireland is 353! Nearly there.
