That is done where I live but nobody cares about a few cents more.
However, the indigenous population is tax-exempt. Their shopping carts are stuffed to the top with junk food. And it shows. Also with the level of illnesses.

We've been educating people about the dangers of a bad diet for decades and it clearly doesn't work on it's own. There is literally no bad outcome to imposing a tax on unhealthy foods. Even if it doesn't change peoples buying habits at all, you are at least raising some extra revenue to put towards paying for their health issues.
