A bit of a hiatus (lockdown, work, personal things etc) but finally read the Bible all the way through, again!
How on earth can anybody read this mess and believe its the word of (any) God is beyond me.
Read about a 3rd of it and left of for a bit. (TBH the unrelenting slaughter was getting to me a bit) Picked up again and read whole books at a time. The contradictions alone had me questioning, never mind the bloodshed etc (That was before I got to the new Testament).
Then the New Testament accounts doent agree with each other.
I tried.
The bible is a crock.
Different books, Different authors, different theologies.

Modern church...
We'll try to reconcile them all and call it the bible...
Good luck with that one.

Thanks, Nails; it's nice to meet a soul one can agree with about the occasional thing. Some souls will never agree with anything, on principle.
In an effort to bring some semblance of order back to this thread ….

Mozz, // The act of a believer praying for someone doesn't offend or upset me in the slightest.//

Nor me … if I know what they’re praying for. If it’s something I would like, fine - if it’s something they privately decide is good for me, not fine.

Theland, //Buy another book.//

Try Harry Potter. Knocks spots off the bible for lessons in morality.
//Try Harry Potter. Knocks spots off the bible for lessons in morality.//

It's also more believable.

Don't be so sure. I recall a scientific test where people were prayed for and the results were worse for the prayed upon.
Not the most encouraging thing you want to hear from your surgeon Beso, pre or post op, "I'll pray for you."
I wouldn't mind MIBs.
Prayer works.
It seems not to work Theland I don't have a link, but I'll look for it. Mind you, science doesn't seem to appeal to religious people, so perhaps best to ignore it and stick to what you know to be true.
Ah yes. But prayer hardly presents as a subject for scientific experimentation.
Theland; you said that prayer works. What does that mean if not that it's been tried and tested and shown to be efficacious? And that would be science - i.e. try it and see what happens. If nothing happens, then you can't say it works. Science just means suck it and see. It's not mystical and spiritual. You say prayer works, and I say 'Oh that sounds impressive; can you show me how?"
If I say that Atheism works, would you just believe me?
Ah yes I fully understand what you mean, and your entirely reasonable doubts, even unbelief.
The gospel is a very simple message, but its depth is powerful.
It is a living relationship with God, and praying to Him does not cause a change in natural events, but brings one into His will, to see things differently, and somehow change can come.
Oh its so difficult to explain.
You have different types of relationships with different people, the same with God. He has His own special relationship with each and every one of us, meeting us at our point of need.
Yes prayer really works, bit not in a test tube.
Keeping up your membership of the Ramblers Association I see, Theland. :-)
Thank you Douglas.
A timely comment.

Theland thinks I sick . 20:20 Mon 06th Jul 2020 .
20:59 Sun 05th Jul 2020  Im more humane than that sick backward, bronze age tome written by nomadic immortal, misogynistic dessert dwellers who had no more understanding of life than the sheep that they kept. You agree that its moral to stone women to death because they dont bleed on their wedding night.

/ WHERE did you get that from ? I look for it and I cannot find it so - please give me the the chapter and Verse ?
THERE many verses in the Bible . God is praising a good wife and once you are married to her you must take care of her and look after her .. Proverbs 18.20 – 31.8. 31 {AKJV} Deuteronomy 22-22-28 you have laws in England about rape- so back in the old days in Jewish nation- have rules and regulations.. to be followed but I cannot find any scripture about the wedding night blood
let's be fair to the ladies- it is normally the man who is the problem . in today's modern world - adultery does not exist . he wants to have a relationship with a woman before marriage and he persuaded her to take part . then on many occasions he will leave her. ???
