Given human propensity for hostility towards those that we disagree with?
Sure, theres a few here and there, but on the whole, AB threads derail within minutes.
Just human nature or something more?
As a regular poster in R&S I see it all the time.
As a cursory viewer in other topics I also see it.

Is it EVER possible to just have a friendly debate/Chat/discourse ?

I'd have thought that any other mod would've seen Andy's involvement in the thread and thought "he's dealing with it, I'll leave him be", but it's irrelevant now, so there's no real point in continuing the debate.
