Perhaps because no one else did more to stick up for democracy when many showed their true colours as folk who didn't give a darn about democracy, they just wanted to force their desires through and darn the public no matter what.

The problem with that argument is that it should be obvious that Johnson was hijacking the debate for his own personal self-interest, rather than because he genuinely cared about it. Moreover, it's possible to stick up for "democracy" whilst also sticking to legality. Indeed, not only possible, but necessary, for democracy loses all meaning if the only way to "achieve" it is to try and break the law, which Johnson has now done on multiple separate occasions -- including, but not limited to, the prorogation attempt.
