Classical composer

Not sure if these details are correct but hopefully someone will know who I am talking about.

Who was the composer who came from a large family, several members of which were mad including his mother? Hope that makes sense.

Actually I may be wrong. Reading up on the web does not indicate his mother went mad.

His father was an alcoholic and a rather brutal man, and marriage was not good, so his mother was rather sad.

Not sure she ever went mad though.
