Does anyone cook dried pasta in the microwave, or even just soak it in a bowl of boiling water? Does it work?

No. I think if it was that easy it'll be on the cooking instruction.
Usually less than 10 mins in a pan. Why use a microwave?
well it might soften the pasta but it will be disgusting
Never done that. The only thing I've soaked in boiling water is cous cous.
Vermicelli noodles are soaked in boiling water but they are really thin.
I would have thought it would come out hard from a microwave.
1 cup of pasta - macaroni or similar into microwave proof bowl add 2 cups of liquid, cover with clingfilm, prick with a fork and zap for 5 minutes. remove cling film give a good stir add butter if required. re-cover with clingfilm and zap for 2 - 4 minutes more depending on what type of pasta you are using.
It'd be easier just to put it in a pan.
Pasta should be cooked in a pan with the water at a rolling boil.
I agree it would be much easier to cook it the conventional way - but that wasn't the question was it?

I’m just asking the question...
I’m not sure it would be disgusting, I’m sure I’ve read somewhere that it is possible and edible.
I don’t think it’d come out hard as it’s done in water.
Thanks APG, looks entirely possible then.
Some packets of pasta with a powder sauce included advise to cook it in the microwave.
You can buy plain pasta that goes in the microwave but I think that’s already party cooked (it’s squishy I the packet).
I once did it when I was waiting for an oven to be installed and only had a microwave to cook by. It was a massive effort but it is possible
I would definitely use boiling water rather than cold before putting in the microwave.
Instructions (using cold water) here:

This says much the same but offers the alternative option of using boiling water in order to reduce the cooking time:
