To me, he always played one character, and that was rooted in his James Bond persona.
I have never been able to comfortably relax watching him in any other film - I simply see Sean Connery, and never the role he is playing.
That said, my view is seriously in the minority, he was hugely succcessful and revered as an actor, he just never seemed to work for me.

I know what you mean Andy, he didn't change his performance to fit the role, he just Connery-ed the role to fit him. Just think of his lack of a Russian accent in Red October, or an Irish one in The Intouchables.
In fairness to him, he's far from alone in that. Michael Caine is much the same. The saving grace for both actors is that their base personas are/were extraordinarily charismatic and watchable.

I have banged on for years about the Oscar he received for The Untouchables, but I think your observation that he 'Connery-ed' each role around him is most perceptive, and maybe it is that which is appreciated by his fans.
As for Michael Caine, with the exception of Get Carter, I always bracketed him in the same division as Connery, until he made Harry Brown, a role for which he had to be the age he now is, and he was wonderful in that film.
I also thought Ben Ballance-Drew (rapper Plan B) was mesmerising as the villain of the piece - I found him really easy to hate!
A friend of mine knows him, and says he is a lovely guy, and he took my appraisal of his acting as gratefully received praise.
