When Import Duty Will Be Applied
7 Answers
I buy product regularly from a retailer in Poland.
What happens if I pay for goods before January 2021 but they do not arrive in the UK until afterwards?
At the moment I buy and pay for goods which are despatched by courier and go straight through customs as Poland is an EU state.
As I see it at the very least I will have to pay the UK delivery company their current £12 customs handling fee after the end of the current rules but when is it going to be applied on the date of arrival?

If your goods are dispatched after Jan 1, it's not yet clear what the situation is. Negotiations are still ongoing. It's already too late to get the results of any deal approved by both parliaments, and Barnier is now self-isolating which will slow down negotiations even further. They may pull something out of the bag and somehow rush it through, but I would not count on it.
Prepare for two scenarios:
1) No deal, in which case WTO tariffs will apply, which will vary according to what you're shipping
2) A fudge, in which case we'll carry on trading from Jan 1 as we have been up to Jan 1, while they finalise things

> One might guess that an import duty would apply when the goods got imported. Good luck finding that isn't so.
And would one might guess how much that import duty would be? Good luck finding that out for a fact, rather than a guess.
> on the same sort of thread, will I have to pay 'import-duty' on repatriating household goods to uk when moving them back from my old home in Spain , most of which were initially bought in UK
I wouldn't think so. Even so, it would help if you had receipts.
