My son has just bought a flat where all the walls are stud and he wants to hang a 38" plasma TV. He is terrified it will pull the plaster board away.

Can anyone suggest a way that's safe and secure?

Only way I can think of is to get a Stud Finder from and DIY store, that will be a little box which you run along the wall and it will beep or Glow up when it goes over a "stud"

If you can screw the bracket into these it should be strong enough to support it,
There are a number of proprietary plaster board fixings on the market nowadays, which are capable of taking large loads. He needs to get along to a decent builders merchants or specialist hardware shop and ask. Don't bother with the DIY sheds (B&Q et al) as the people employed in these places are as helpful as lobotomised Hamsters.
PS the majority of stud work is now very thin metal and not too good for fixing into.
How old is the flat?
If new build then more than likely metal system. If older house, then possibly 3x2 studding.
Find the studs by gentle tapping with a hammer, usually 16" apart, or 450mm. Ensure you get good fix to that. By good fix I mean coarse threaded coachscrew, not ordinary screws.
If needed redrill the bracket to suit location of studs.
Also recommend the use of spring toggles. Ask at good builders merchants.
