I am looking to create some publicity around an educational event I am helping to run. Where can I find out a list of names and numbers for local media organisations in my area to contact?

A little time spent searching with Google for the local organizations should give you the info you need.
If not try your local library (or maybe council)
(a search in Goolge under "Media contacts" or something like that may turn up a web site that lists them all - if you are lucky.)

the press gazette is the newspaper industry's newspaper and their website is probably got contacts on.
also www.holdthefrontpage.co.uk is a press industry website
or
www.the newspapersociety.co.uk
most newspapers are part of a newspaper group such as archant, newsquest etc etc so get on their websites.
also email your towns website as most reporters have close links to these people for the heads up on new stories so they can pass it on.
Also get your self a press release done up so you can email it about and also get hold of the local radio.
