Bird Identification Please?

I went for a walk on the east coast today. It was very mild and no wind, and I walked right out to the seashore across the sand dunes, quite a 15 minutes walk from the road. Out there, not a tree in sight I heard bird song in the sky quite high above me. Not seabirds, but a songbirds and lots of them. What might they have been?

Although resident in the UK Skylarks do migrate to escape bad weather on the Continent. They are more likely to be flocked together in coastal regions as they pass into the UK.

I could hear them but couldn't see them, it was cloudy and they were quite high up. I wondered about Skylarks, but I associate them with the summertime. The migrating route might explain it Togo.

It's quite unusual to hear multiple skylarks. They tend to be quite lone birds (in the UK)

I have researched a bit more and discovered that the area of the beach is an SSSI due to its dune plants, and supports numbers of skylarks and meadow pipits.

I was erring towards skylark when I read your question, nice to know it was, they seem to have been in decline in recent years.
