Fasting.

I want to begin fasting for weight loss and other health benefits.
Has anybody experience of this?
Also, I know I would find it easier if I drank tea and coffee as well as water.
What is your advice?

If you're consuming shakes, you're not fasting. Yes I've fasted for up to 3 days at a time and it's helped my IBS no end. It also make your skin clearer, brain function and eyesight sharper and gives you more energy and focus. I still had peppermint tea and black coffee but made sure I consumed plenty of water. Last week I fasted from 10am Sunday until 7pm Monday and...

There are no well constructed studies from REPUTABLE authorities to show that fasting is beneficial to health or weight loss over the established advice of reduction in portions or the Mediterranean diet.
One can choice from conflicting studies the one that suits one,s point of view.
I agree that advising someone with underlying medical problems to fast, may be dangerous.......and yet it has been done on AB.
In medicine, if research conflicts it usually means that there is no correct answer OR, it matters not just one jot.

Unfortunately too many people define fasting as going without food for extended periods of time, assuming longer is better. Current research shows that is not the case. And whatever way you choose, if there are health issues, definitely talk to your doctor. Listen to what your body needs...there is no benefit in going without eating because you think you *should*. It certainly isn't right for everyone.
//New Judge - Are you joking? No-one here has mentioned 24/7 fasting, or 3 day fasts!
the fasts mentioned have not even been full day ones!
3 day fasts are extreme and not recommended for most people.//
No I'm not joking and I'm not backtracking. I was commenting on the OP's point of fasting to lose weight. Theland suggested he had not eaten for three days (Weds - Fri.). Shortly into the thread somebody had reported not eating for two days. At 8:16 on Friday Theland mentioned he was into day three of the fast. If he's eating at normal intervals he's not fasting and the thread title is wrong. But if he is fasting then three days for someone on medication is too long.
If somebody wants to lose 50lbs they obviously have a serious weight problem and they should only do so under proper medical supervision, not by reading some claptrap about "fasting" and "autophagy" that they've picked up on an internet forum.
BTW "fasting" is not skipping lunch. Nor is it going between breakfast and lunch without eating. I do that every day. So does everybody else. If not we'd be eating 24/7.

That is your *opinion*. That break could be 12 hours or more=fasting. Yes, a loose definition...but acceptable. Particularly for anyone testing the water.
Though overnight fasts are said to yield better results.

As I’ve never, ever been a breakfast eater then I’ve been ‘fasting’ since I was a small child, although I never considered it fasting, and probably still don’t, it’s just me.
The first solid food I eat each day is lunch at about 1pm. Prior to that, it’s my evening meal the previous day, eaten at around 6pm.
