Terrible photo. ~But, but India spends on a space programme and we still give overseas aid to them. What is going wrong with how they spend their money? Obvious answer is that the Indian state does not care about this section of their population. Given that, what can anyone do? It pulls the heart-strings, no matter what.
I still don’t know why you posted this thread, Khandro. You say the picture accompanied a Spectator review of two books about Pakistan but I’ve no idea what books they are, what they said, or what the review said. Poverty is not unusual in third world countries and neither are orphaned or disabled children. I’ve seen very many children deliberately maimed by their parents in order that they are more successful in their allotted career - begging. What point are you trying to make?
