Why do people never refer to a Meat Supper or a Vegetable Supper? Why just a Fish Supper? Any idea?

we were CofE mostly, though the old man was Catholic, but we nearly always had a fish supper on friday night. Cod or Huss, perhaps Haddock and chips.
we didn't have a sit in fish and chip restaurant or casfe, so it was a friday night staple takeaway, to unwrap it with glee, douse with salt and vinegar, loads of bread, just right.
Fish on Friday was not just an RC thing. Many protestants also adhered to the custom.
I went to a CoE school, always fish on Friday for lunch p
the bread was so you could make chip sandwiches, ok as a kid i guess.
I don’t think I’ve ever referred to it as a fish supper
Jackdaw is right, lots of protestants obeyed the custom.
Yes, I was brought up a Protestant and we always had fish and chips for tea on a Friday.
we sometimes have fish on a friday if at my brothers, we are a non religious family.
The irony is that abstaining from meat was a kind of symbolic penance. As fish is now dearer than fillet steak it is a luxury.
I could now devour a fish, chip and pea doorstep with best butter, drool.
i bought three pieces of salmon fillet, very costly, but it was for a special meal for friends.
so could i mamy.
Fish is not more expensive than fillet steak! Where did you get that from ?
