I heard Peter Ustinov say on-erous. I've always pronounced it own-erous. Have I been making myself sound thick/common?
How would you pronounce it?

I'd stick to broke or *** up.
something like that, but worse.

One thing that I have mentioned on here before, is the missing "T" in pronunciation by lots of people in the media, one example being the word "committee", where the double "t" changes to "d" when being spoken. It happens all the time. Tis true folks!
it's ow-nuh-ruhs, end of.
Is that "ow" as in "now" or "ow" as in "o"?
the Americans don't pronounce their T's, so often i hear words like utter, coming out as udder.. very odd
Not only Americans, Emmie. Tanya Stevenson, who replaced John McCririck on C4 racing, hardly ever pronounced her 'ts' when giving the odds. Two to one was always, "3 der 1" and so on.
i haven't heard her to be fair, but i can't understand some who are so lazy, they can't pronounce their T's. Unless they have a stammer or a lisp, that's somewhat different.
the whole country started changing its pronunciation about 700 years ago, which is why spelling and pronunciation are out of whack.

i cant remember what PU sounds like - i can only think of him with his hercule poirot accent!
Onerous is derived from the Latin 'onus' which has a short o but in English a long o.

He's reading his autobiography on R4e at various times every day, bednobs.
That's where I heard him. Although he always seems to be putting on an accent.
What about a Cockney asking for a "drink of war a"?
there are obviously some here who don't pronounce their T's but i find when watching American dramas, even comedy shows that t isn't neccessarily pronounced.
find me a cockney, they are pretty thin on the ground. Besides it would most likely be wart a
