I'd not want bird she ite and tree sap etc all over my car / drive way, not to mention the roots pushing up the block paving. I'd probably have found the local travellers and got them to hack the whole thing down for a few quid no questions asked. They do have their uses.
I doubt very much whether this was Mr & Mrs Lees' first resort to solve their problem. It seems they had tried putting black bags in the tree to deter birds but to no avail. No doubt 25 years ago the little sapling looked very attractive. But trees have a habit of growing and when it became clear it was a nuisance steps should have been taken to abate it. You only ever hear of the end of ongoing sagas such as this one, never what went before.
Boundary dispute
I am sorry neighbours have come to this
I dont know what i would say if a neighbour said - the birds in your tree are poo-ing on my car ...
I did that to a boundary hedge - by the third year of asking it was up to 9' so I cut my half down to 6' - and they kinda levelled it up a year later. - all sorts of needless ya-ya: a bit like AB really. They weren't in, wouldnt give permission, and even if I paid for the whole lot, there were insurmountable difficulties about access.

On the basis that the 'Neighbours From Hell' producers seem to be able to find endless scenarios to film, we have to understand that neighbour disputes can, and often do, reach ludicrous levels of animosity, and commonly end in violence.
We are a territorial species, and the notion that someone is 'messing' with our personal space can bring out the utterly unreasonable in the most passive and thoughtful of people.
It's easy from the sidelines to accept that incidents like this look simply petty and stupid, but as advised, i doubt this is the only dispute going on, or that it has just happened.
Actions like this usually occur after months of years of attrition, which build up without either side really understanding how out of hand things now are.
I have always made every effort, almost all successful, to secure good relations with any neighbours - it saves this sort of grief and nonsense - who needs it!
