Maybe I’m naive, but I was under the impression (my fault for not researching) that there was no one holidaying in the UK from the USA. Imagine my surprise when I bumped into a family of Californians in the Yorkshire Dales! They’d had to have all manor of tests and the plane was about 2/3 full but they’re here.

The USA currently places the UK within 'Level 3' of their Covid travel advice, meaning that intending travellers should 'reconsider travel':

The US is on the UK's amber list, meaning that people arriving from the USA are required to book and pay for Covid tests, to be taken 2 days and 8 days after arrival, before they depart. They also need to have a negative result from a Covid test, taken in the USA in the three days prior to departure. They have to quarantine in their UK accommodation for 10 days unless they pay for a private PCR test 5 days after their arrival. (If that test is negative, they then no longer need to quarantine but they still need to take the 8th day test as well).

It can end up being extremely expensive! I have friend living in Italy (which is also on the amber list an therefore subject to the same rules), who has a flat here in Suffolk. She was considering coming o her flat but decided that it just wasn't worth it, with each private PCR test costing £145 and with the Italian government requiring her to self-isolate on her return as well.

It's surprising what you can do if you are prepared to put up with all the red tape re PCR tests, quarantine etc. A friend of mine is enjoying a trip in a Scandinavian country at the moment. She'll have to do 10 days' penance for her sins though. God forgive her for wanting to see her family.

I agree with 237, a rich relative of mine who lives in Switzerland as a UK citizen normally travels the world on exotic holidays every couple of months and even during covid has managed since Christmas to go to the Maldives, Greece on holiday, 2 trips to her villa in Spain, 3 trips to her place in Dorset and a walking holiday in Devon. She pays for every test going and does the quarantine where she's supposed to, including cutting it short by paying for expensive PCR tests.
