I've tried with this, I really have. Beautifully shot, good atmosphere, but whichever idiot responsible for casting Rowan Atkinson as Maigret should be flogged, then handed their P45. Atkinson is so desperate not to let the remotest hint of humour escape from his face, he's totally wooden and inert. Painful.

Watched it as you say beautifully shot atmospheric but there was still elements of Mr Bean about it!!

Yes I’ve never quite understood why anyone should want to try to make Mr Atkinson into a serious actor. He was OK as Mr Bean, and reasonably passable in “Blackadder”. He was also OK as Inspector Fowler, the perfect foil to Detective Inspector “Oity-Toity-Arty-Farty” Grimm in the ”Thin Blue Line”. Then of course there was “Small-Fawcett”, the bit part he played in one of the James Bond films. But all these parts were really variations on Mr Bean. The part of Maigret needs an actor with a certain “je ne sais quoi” (if you’ll pardon the pun). Not necessarily gravitas but certainly not Mr Atkinson.

Can't remember the original Maigret (Rupert Davies) letting his face slip very much. Maybe George Simenon described Maigret as being a dour individual.

I thoroughly enjoyed the plot & the programme as a whole, not once did I think of any of the other characters he's played.

The worst Poirot was Peter Ustinov. A great actor but terribly miscast.

Another programme which may be worth watching is Agatha Christie's 'Witness for the Prosecution' (BBC tonight and tomorrow). I remember seeing the film version many years ago with Charles Laughton. I remember it has a very unexpected ending but fortunately I've forgotten what it is, so will have to look in.

Although I remember the Charles Laughton ending, I am curious to see how this version compares with the original.
