tiling on wood

I want to tile onto a wooden board and use it as a bath panel, do i need to paint the wood with any paint, primer etc before tiling? i have already tried this without painting the wood but the tile adhesive didnt take.

Try painting it with a dilute solution of PVA glue (the white, wood-working glue). As it's a bath panel, I'd advise waterproof PVA.

Best to create as rigid a wooden board as you can or the tile adhesive cracks and they drop off. Use ply at least 9mm thickness and support all round and with a couple of vertical struts. Then as catso says. Use a flexible tile adhesive or put some additive into the adhesive to increase the flexibility.
There is also something out there called AquaPanel which is designed to be used in bathrooms and doesn't need priming. You just tile straight onto it.
