flexible cystoscopy
I am a 49 year old male and have been told to undergo a flexible cystoscopy, will this be painful?

Having never experienced this procedure, I can't speak to its discomfort level...
I see them performed often(I work in the Op Theatre). You will almost certainly not have a general anaesthetic(I've not seen one yet for a flexible cystoscopy). A little local anaesthetic jelly will be squirted down your urethra which will take effect quickly. The scope will then be inserted. You should feel nothing more than mild discomfort for a minute or two and the whole procedure will probably last no more than 10 minutes.
It's a routine procedure and you need not worry.
