No, it is NOT compulsory.
(Sorry to hijack this question)

I used to have Smart Meter with Eon which I really liked.
My current supplier gave me a different one which is rubbish.
Can you swap (buy a different meter). Are there universal ones, or do you have to stick with what you have been given ?
They can say you have to have a smart meter to keep getting a special rate if it was sold as a with smart meter rate like mine was
Just ignore it if you don't want one. Scottish Power email us all the time (and I mean constantly), they just won't take a hint.. It is entirely your choice
I get constant phone calls about a smart meter which I ALWAYS ignore and it just goes to answerphone. The only good thing about covid at its peak, they all stopped, but back again now !
SSE pester me all the time and i have lost count of how many times i have told them i dont want one. They lie and say my last 2 bills were estimated but i always give the readings online when they ask.
Sorry - I don't really understand the anti-smart meter lobby (akin to anti-vaxxers?). If it's easier for them & us, cuts their costs & our bills then what's the problem?
I resisted for ages as I didn't want 'live billing' where you pay each month for the power you use, needing a regular monthly payment. It became possible recently so I had no further objection. It also means I don't have to get down on the floor in the ball to get readings, I wasn't always confident I could get up.
I live in a new build house with a smart meter.

It doesn't work, so I have to send my readings monthly.
They don't seem to care.
A friend has in 2 properties. 400 miles apart.

She has had a lot of hassel with her provider as neither are working right.

The Smart Meter rollout is a complete shambles. The suppliers don't really want it, but the Govt has set them a target and they are afraid that if they fail to meet it the rapacious Government will execute draconian financial penalties.
