As I wear both long distance and reading glasses - cant remember so well what is the best to buy.

My sister for the first time is getting prescription glasses only for reading and I think I am right to tell her to tell the optician to get her anti-glare and thin lens. Would that be ok for reading glasses. I know the thin glasses are worth it to make them feel "lighter" but would the anti-glare make any difference.

If it is just for reading and she is not spending a fortune on them ie designer frames etc then I would not bother with the expense of extra films or thinning of lenses

well thanks for that - as you say for reading but I myself am wearing reading glasses and forgot when I was getting them like 3 years ago to order thin lens and so these glasses are a little heavier. Like you are aware they're on your face.

I have told her to buy the cheapest frames out because for me - I lose, break, sat, or can never find them so I buy a few pair to have about.
If she spends most of the day reading then thin lenses would be worth the extra, otherwise not necessary. Today standard lenses are a lot thinner and lighter than they used to be. Anti glare lenses are essential for driving, pointless for reading
have to say i agree - i wear my glasses from the moment i get up till i go to sleep, and i don't have thin lenses - i have plastic frames and lenses are plastic so they feel light enough anyway

oh - ok thanks. She also mentioned that Boots to whom she going to do suggested "would you like us to another "advanced" test on you for £40 - like sister could not tell me what this "advanced" test is. So I have told her not to bother at all.

She got the all clear at diabetic eye screening - I just told her to go for the regular test in Boots. Advanced test for god's sake for reading. Are they sticking them arm in? I'll tell her when next I see her - to just get a regular test
Varifocals is the answer. I need both too and my varifocals are just great.
It takes a little white to adjust to them but after that you dont know you have them!
Varifocals are totally unnecessary if you need glasses only for reading
//can never find them//
after searching the house i usually find mine on the top of my head
Hi JennyJoan, I wear varifocals and like your sister, I was offered the extra test, I was told it was to see had I any illnesses that would show at the back of my eye, I declined, I know if I am unwell or whatever - I'll go to the doc then, no point in worrying from an eye test. Something like the eyes are the window to your soul the optician can now see if we're gonna be ill by paying them an extra few bob, I'm also like ael, I spend ages looking for my glasses (that should be on me all day) but find them on my head like a hairband more often than not
I only wear glasses for reading, but when I had my last pair I had photo chromatic lenses (ie anti glare), and I consider it well worth it as I can now sit outside or in the garden and read, whereas before in nice weather I had to retreat inside because of the glare.
