There's one advertised on the TV at the moment saying something like 'have lots to talk about, keep up with what's going on' (can't remember what it's called!). What's wrong with buying a newspaper or watching or listening to the news?
My wife is currently making a documentary on this type of magazine exploring whether the social dysfunction portrayed within them is actually having a significant effect on normalising such behaviour with their readers and thus helping to promote the dysfunction. We're talking things like Heat and all the other gossipy clap-trap mags, not obviously National Geographic. Anyone any thoughts on whether "I married my rapists adopted father who turned out to be my Dad too!" might impact on people's sense of normal?
There must be a huge market for these rags. The title, I notice, is usually made up of one word so as not to intellectually challenge its audience, and every page seems to have about 30 articles, each made up of about 10 words - such is the attention span of the readership. These things are the very essence of 'dumbing down'.
