Another Death Notice

This chap dies and his widow calls the local paper to have a notice published. They ask her what she wants printed. She replies “Cohen Dead”. The tell her the minimum charge of £5 and for that she can have 5 words. She then says “Cohen Dead. Volvo for sale”

So if my understanding is correct; say the widower’s husband had been called David, then this could be considered racist – the name David being a common male western christian/first name.

Quite probably, Hymie. I am reminded of Yacov Moshe Hakohen Maza who died nearly 6 months ago and was often described as a contentious comedian who told jokes about Jews for the larger part of his career. Anyone can check this out on YouTube. He was an ex rabbi known as Jackie Mason. Just as well he wasn't an ABer...

If the woman in the joke had a name that wasn’t Jewish (or Scottish, who are also considered mean), whould the joke still work?

Only half so. The choice of ‘Cohen’ was deliberate.

So if I had posted the joke and deliberately used the name David – it could be construed as ‘somewhat’ racist?

I've heard the Scottish version of this (many years ago) and I thought that it was funny. It was a Scot who told the joke.

It's an oldie. I still like it. There are still a number of people who will never have heard it.

I’m not a Scot but I’m married to one and it’s our anniversary today. I’m surprised there’s been no Swedish backlash for featuring a Volvo.
