Was having a chat with the family last night about TV programmes. Out of nowhere I remembered a girl I used to work with way back in the 60s. She had a black/white portable TV which stayed in a cupboard. She only took it out to watch a programme she particularly wanted to see then it was switched off and went back in the cupboard. Man from Uncle was one show it came out for. Thought it very strange at the time but when I look at the rubbish offered up these days, perhaps she had the right idea. Funnily enough I could take you to her flat but for the life of me I can't remember her name.

Just as many good dramatists about then as there are now, Maggie, and far, far fewer channels to employ them. Hence the perceived better programmes.
As an aside, i also loved The Man From Uncle and always wanted to be Illya Kuryakin when i grew up :-)

With me having a nasty suspicious mind, I find myself wondering about whether or not she had a licence for it. If not, she might have wanted to keep her telly out of sight (except for when she was actually watching it, of course) in case someone checking up on TV licences came knocking on her door ;-)

A teaching colleague of mine once moved into a flat where he found himself being hounded for non-payment of TV rental, and for non-payment of a TV licence, by the previous occupier. He thought that was 'a bit off', given that the previous occupier of the flat was . . .

They can't really re-run The Man from Uncle these days, as the kids of today would think nothing at all about Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin being able to video call Alexander Waverly from anywhere in the world. To them it's simply Zoom or Skype. To us it was amazing science fiction!
We had a floor standing model with a 9 inch screen & double doors at the front. My Dad's chair was positioned with his back to the TV - the only thing he watched was boxing.
Buenchico. I can’t see the pic at 13.36. Who was the previous tenant in your colleague’s flat?
Let's try again then, Clover!

Thanks, Buenchico.
The Man from Uncle was big in those days. Your point is good, we probably watch too much TV these days.
