Dave Gilmour on Radio 2 now with Ken Bruce, explaining how this track came about. He actually has a Ukrainian daughter-in-law and 2 grandchildren who are therefore half Ukrainian. The band with which the Ukrainian musician was a member actually supported Floyd at a gig in Belarus a few years back.
The song is actually a protest song from 1915 and has since become a major song of cheer and uplift for the Ukrainian people.
