During my school days (1940's) yes, only the girls were taught Domestic Science.
I was taught Home Ec at school and it was open to all sexes, we were taught how to cook a 3 course meal of various budgets
But
My main experience was at home from my parents both of whom could cook
this is just one of the changes in modern life, I think: boys are no longer expected to run up a table or some shelving when they can be bought; the same for cooking, now that women work

As @ naomi24 the average family could spend £20 in macs, and for what? rubbish in my view, for one sitting.
500g mince beef £3, bag carrots 50p, frozen peas 80p, bag onions50/60p, 2.5kls tatters around £1, veg stock tablets £1. Total 6.90. Makes a hell of lot of cottage pie. :)
