Imagine I am standing for election and I announce that there is to be a national lockdown due to covid where people cannot gather at funerals (to say goodbye to loved ones), or visit elderly relatives (in care homes) or have people around for parties. But these rules do not apply to me as Prime Minister (obviously) – I would expect to get zero votes.
Now imagine I am Prime Minister and I announce that there is to be a national lockdown due to covid where people cannot gather at funerals (to say goodbye to loved ones), or visit elderly relatives (in care homes) or have people around for parties; and these rules apply to everyone, including me.
Subsequently (while most of the population are obeying the rules), it transpires that I could not give a stuff about these rules – at the next general election I would expect to get zero votes (unless my name was Boris Johnson, then I’d expect TTT & Naomi24 to vote for me, but that’s all).

None of those scenarios reflect reality, so it enlightens little. The reality is that the rules applied to all and he claims that the incidents where he was present weren't parties or similar banned gatherings; so no issue, save for the opportunity for the no-hopers to keep slinging manure in the hope of causing damage.
As for remaining in position ruining the party's chances, difficult to think of many who could replace him that wouldn't drop support even further. But a week is a long time in politics so who knows come the next GE.
