'Did I say I have? (I have) & why would you be "Genuinely interested" ?
Erm....ok. It's just that when you wrote
'Peter Pedant; You make me angry with your cheap, flippant, talk of death, a smarttass who has never faced a gun.'
It implied, to me at least, that you had personal experience, otherwise what standpoint are you talking from?

// The Geneva Convention ........postdate the world wars.//
not really - come from henri doo-dah and the aftermath of the battle of Solferino 1860. - American civil war, confed POW commandants were tried for war crimes. They hanged one or two
Particularly one ( confed) ( Camp Anderson I think) who had a "death zone". and used it ! (*)
Boer War ( sozza 2nd South African War) the treaty at Vereniging specifically says no (war crimes) trials unless already in session
1918 - The beast of Holzminden was brought to justice - either massacring escapees or using a death strip
1940- The Russians had NOT signed the most modern geneva convention ( French English and Germans had) and My God (nein, Mein Gott!) they got mistreated. And when they invaded Germany made sure they got their own back.
Everyone in the East ( of europe that is !) 2022 knows what a geneva convention is, they just arent abiding by it
I mean, everyone on AB really knew that didnt they?
(*) lose fence and a red line over which if anyone strayed, they got pot shot at. Yes 1862
Tomus - dont read this ! - too late! he is taking a big breath, he's gonna foooooo.......

no one had signed the geneva convention
excusay-mwah ! ( French because henri Dumont started it all)
The First Geneva Convention for the Amelioration of the Condition of the Wounded in Armies in the Field, held on 22 August 1864, is the first of four treaties of the Geneva Conventions.[1][2]
it was significantly revised and replaced in 1906, 1929, and finally 1949.
Russia ( or - - USSR excusay again) had not signed the 1929 revision ( mainly gas on civilian population I loosely recall)
and so you see itch, the conventions really did exist in the thirties. POWs were guaranteed food ( hem hem) and one shower a fortnight ! ( I am not sure if warm)
Honestly my daydy WAS a brit POW in the east.I can tell you of his speeches to the Kommandant about ter daah the Geneva convention. (Thorn) - One guard said to him after he had blasted the Hun using 'Du' - [You KNOW this is against the convention.....] the guard said - dont be too lippy, we can send you to far more unpleasant places .....
