If you are a man and shaving, shave very carefully.
Use shaving oil rather than foam, wash in warm water first, let the oil soak in and shave very slowly and carefully.
Pat face dry, moisturise with non-oily moisturiser and don't put cologne on your face - pat it onto your forehead and neck instead.

Trying to ascertain the reason why, and sometimes where the acne is, is a good start, as people get acne for different reasons. For example, having teenage skin as opposed to say, like me, more hormonal reasons and having a compromised immune system.
Maybe if you could give us a bit more information? It can help you avoid doing things which could inadvertently make it worse, use products which are too harsh for/unsuitable for your skin or lead to issues such as scarring.
How old are you and what is your skin (and your health/diet) like generally, is your skin oily at all or just in certain areas like the T zone with combination skin? Do you tend to get acne in certain places or is is it quite widespread? Do you have it all the time or get outbreaks, generally or say in particular round that time of the month?
Andy has mentioned hair and I find that is something I have to watch and keep it off my face as much as possible. I can't get away with washing my hair that infrequently though, it'd end up an oily mess and make things worse. Conditioners can contribute to mine. I tend to use 2 in 1 products, or just shampoo and, if I do use conditioner, keep it, and my hair after it's been on, away from my face.
I also try and avoid using towels on my face, when I've washed it, I tend to gently pat it dry with a clean sheet of kitchen roll, I keep a roll in my bathroom.
