I am not being funny/racist or anything, but I think the next prime minister should be English.
What do you all think??

Untitled You beat me to it. Khandro - I hear what you say about Sunak’s racial background, but I’m curious - why would that be an issue? Someone’s race is only a component of their identity. When it comes to the ability to do a job I think most people would say that race should absolutely not be a factor. What I’m inferring from you is that the job of British PM should...

For some probably not Naomi, but being whiter probably helps.

I do see where some come from about being born in Britain for PM though, along the lines of requirements for US President. Heritage though should not come into it.
Sunak was born in Southampton, YMB - not that I would want him for PM - but that’s nothing to do with his parentage or his colour.
We're talking (at least I am) about Rishi Sunak who may have a British passport so he is a British subject, but that doesn't mean he isn't an Indian; ethnically, culturally, psychologically, physically etc. & he might be proud of it & why shouldn't he be?

You only continue in this vein for ideological reasons. I've explained my view many times on this thread.

I continue in this vein because your logic is skewed, khandro. So what about the Jews I mentioned? Theirs is a different culture too.
khandro

''You only continue in this vein for ideological reasons.'

???

"I've explained my view many times on this thread."

Which page? You don't have to repeat yourself - just tell me the page or time where you gave your reasoning.

Also - as naomi24 has asked - does this count for Jews? The children of those who come to the UK in the middle of the last century?

khandro

Beg your pardon. I thought that response was to me.
It may have been, sp, but I’ve put my two penny worth in anyway.
You’ve now got me thinking about Jewish people
baaarp
done that
Disraeli in the time that you had to swear a Protestant oath of allegiance - and what happened was
the father Isaac got into a fight with the local London sunagogue over Ben's Bar mitzvah
oy vey and that led to Benjamin converting to Christianity jsut an eentsy weentsy time before he wished to stand for parliament

which at least some of you, ( wiv History O level yeah?) should have known.

Didja know he kept in wangoland ( Disraeli, maison disraeli) Lord Byron's manservant Tito, clearly Lr Byron was dead by that time

well blimey there is a lot of ya-boo-sucking on this thread
So - apropos my earlier post - which other countries have leaders who are not part of the majority ethnicity?
davebro

It doesn't matter.

All countries do not have the same racial, geographical and education mix of leaders. In the UK we have a large number of non-white representatives in all levels of local and national government. You question would have weight only if you could name a county that, like the UK has a diverse mix of political leaders - the only ones I can think of are the US and New Zealand, although there might be more.

But surely this is moot? What matters is that their elected representatives exercise the will of their electorate. Not what we see in other counties - but what's best for the UK?

In fairness, I understand what khandro is saying to a degree. Electing someone whose interests - and heart - lay elsewhere wouldn’t be good for the country, but that doesn’t by any means preclude all whose families have come here, made this their home, and are proud to be British.
who ' s head a state is Johnny Foreigner?
France Napoleon ( Corsican)
British Royal Fambly - Greek and or German
the one before that? Stuarts ( Scorts, aye)
and before - that - welsh - wales - Owen Tudor, look you
and before that ? not sure? Did Wm the Conqueror go to Eton ?

Holy Roman Empire - is it an ethnic group? - all forrin

Ethpanya - they were mainly Thpanith - No they werent
Louis XIV - ij n'y a plus que Pyrenees, when eez grandson became Kinga Spain and precipitated the War of Spanish Succession

Grimaldi monaco - doesnt sound French
davebro; It's all very simple: the fact that all the 'black & brown' countries only elect black & brown M.P.s & presidents is perfectly natural, but if a white British person suggests doing similarly for Britain, well, that's abhorrent racism.
// Gromit was against 'foreigners' in Government in a thread the other day. //
I was being sarcastic. Boris was born in the USA.
Khandro

Has anyone called you a racist?

Or have we all been trying to get an r pms out of you - something that would justify your position that a non-white Briton would not be fit to hold the post of PM?
*an answer out of you.

The question is simple - what precludes a non-white Briton from becoming PM?

It’s not good enough to point to Zambia or whatever - we’re talking about the UK.
