I don’t believe that applies across the board. I'd hazard a guess that shoplifters and burglars know exactly what the penalties might be but take their chances in the hope they won’t be caught. People who carry out mass shootings are in a different league altogether.

Has anyone noticed that there are NO demands for gun control - either on AB or within the Great American Republic ?
Is this Learned Helplessness?
Learned helplessness is a state that occurs after a person has experienced a stressful situation repeatedly. They come to believe that they are unable to control or change the situation, so they do not try — even when opportunities for change become available.31
( A thousand Abers, starting foo, what dat den, wossee on abart and so on and so on as depressingly usual- no learned helplessness there then ! - ter daah !)

There is no point in anyone in AB 'demanding' gun control, I think it is more or less taken as read by the majority on here.
As for the 'Great American Republic' - the lethal combination of money tied up in gun manufacture, and the 'frontier' mentality that still pervades that society, means that they are comfortable with their gun controls as they are.

We have exchanged our mutual views on this several times.
I do take your point that some criminals regard punishment as an occupational hazard, as the opening to the TV comedy 'Porridge' confirms, but I think as a broad rule, criminals are not thinkers, and therefore I believe my position is broadly accurate, although of course there are exceptions to every rule.

AH 12.15. I didn’t say some criminals regard punishment as an occupational hazard because that’s not what I meant.
You say ‘if anyone thought about the consequences they would not commit the crime in the first place’. I disagree. Most criminals do think about it. They know full well before they commit the crime what the consequences might be - if they are caught. They just hope they’re not.
