something ove always wondered is if black people are keeping themsleves within rascism. I hold the definition of rascism as isolating and treatnig other races unfairly. So shurely things like the mobo awards are in fact slightly rasicst due to the fact that they prevent integaration between races???

We've done this one to death a number of times on AB, and I'll try to explain it, as I see it...

The term 'coloured' is out of date. It's a term generally only used by people, say, over 45.

To describe someone as black...is...not...racist. 4getmenot, please believe me - if you referred to a black colleague at work as 'coloured', people would simply think you were being a bit old fashioned.

It's a 1970s term.

The term 'black' is not racist.. It's descriptive.

There is already a Music Of White Origin award show...there's the Country Music Awards (not many black faces there) and the Kerrang awards (again, not many black faces, but plenty of deaf people).

Okay...let's hand it over to you 4getmenot...what name would you give to an awards show that focussed on dance, soul, r'n'b, rap and hip hop?

See what I mean? It's difficult to summarise those varying musical forms without calling it the MOBOs.

...however, I'd be interested in hearing alternates from you, as I couldn't come up with one.

admarlow/4getmenot - ahh...yeah, that's one that we came up with at work, but it still doesn't fit.

Corrine Bailey Rae was a big winner this year (superb CD by the way), but there's now way you could call her an 'urban' artist.

She would be bought by the same people who buy Katie Melua and Dido, although her music (Motown-tinged pop to blues and jazz) is definitely 'music of black origin'.

See? Difficult innit?
