In my simple mind I can't help considering that if the French were as assiduous in policing/stopping people who wished to emigrate to this country as they are on causing problems for those who wish to go on holiday in or via France then we would have no illegal immigrants.

Does anyone agree with me? Or am I misunderstanding?

They’re not.
It’s the English they’re hostile to, not the British but then you find that in many places all over the world, especially in sport.

I can't claim originality for that; I came across it decades ago and it just appealed to me.

Thank you all for your answers. I found them interesting and informative. I once worked with someone who was very much a Francophile but who always insisted that you should read the small print several times when doing any business with them and always stand with you back to a wall when any agreement was contemplated and completed. I have travelled and worked in France and have come to believe he was right.
