Tiling Over Tiles
9 Answers
I am renovating my bathroom, it is fully tiled on the walls, the tiles are firmly stuck and quite level. Is it ever a good idea to tile over the existing tiles? It would save a lot of time and effort than removing them and having to get the walls re skimmed. But, I don’t want to do a botch job. Any replies, greatly appreciated

We have just had a bathroom renovated here in Ireland. All the tiles had to come off unfortunately. The mess and what was found underneath needed lots of extra and expensive work.
Builder who is an expert, I'm not, will hopefully see this and give his opinion.

You (or your builder) need to to think about junctions with other finishes / architraves / skirtings / windows / light switches.

I'm afraid I was in the pub when you posted last night jonboy :o)
Anyway... yes, over-tiling is fine, but I must repeat what others have said: make sure the old tiles are pretty solid. It's easy to tell.
You will get a double-thickness edge at the top of the tiling of course.
I always use loads of "tile edging/tile trims". It makes a good "frame" around the tiling.
