Paigntonian - As others have pointed out, without some context, and ideally a link, it's difficult to comment on what Ms Mordaunt said, and how it was actually meant.

Thanks, Rockyracoon.The speech mentioned in the Portsmouth press is the one made in the House of Commons just after the Queen's death. Maybe today's was similar, made similar points? It would have been good if the OP had provided more than it did.
I didn't understand the significance of what PM said nor why it was deemed OTT and unpleasant as stated in the OP. But then it was pointed out that it was something to do with Jesus and the cross he had to bear.
