Most people do seem to turn up, go round the cathedral, pose for the camera "holding up" the tower and then leave. I'm sure that there must be more to the place, but I confess I didn't really get to see it.

Would tend to agree with Mole, seems to be just a small residential town. Did a trip and arrived by coach which parked in a huge car park which had been specifically designed to keep all the visiting traffic away from the centre of town. 15 mins walk, thru an archway then just the tower and cathedral in a large walled grassed area, dozen or so kiosks with tourist junk, that was it.
If you are there for a few days maybe a trip to Florence would brighten it up, its about 50 miles away.

catch the train or cab to a lovely place called Forte Dei Marmi. Its only about 20 miles from Pisa and defo worth a visit.

I was in Italy for a weeks holiday a couple of weeks ago. We went toured around Rome / Tuscany / Palma area.
We were actually in Pisa for about three hours. We saw the tower and did the photos, like everyone else. You can go up the tower, but you need to book tickets and they are limited.

You can go round the cathedral if you like, but were a bit jaded by then as we had seen so many up until then.
Other interesting places near by include, Florence which was lovely, but incredibly touristy and expensive. Palma, which was a lot less touristy, and we had our best food here.
