One of the questions asked is "Did you earn £1000 or more from property rent? My son's income from property was more than £1000 but the expenses (Maintenance, agent's fees, insurance etc) meant that he suffered a loss of about £2000. Does the question relate to his gross income or the net result?
Don't suggest I should ring HMRC: I've tried that but after 39 minutes of listening to brain numbing "music" I lost the will to live and had to phone the Samaritans instead.

Is there another question that covers costs?
Isn't there a note next to the question where you get fuller details a what's meant
I would say no to that question. Did you earn .... that means profit surely. Otherwise I think they'd ask it in a different way I think.

Anyway if you say no and plough on, you can always come back later and change it if you have to.
